Two imprisoned lawyers at Tehran’s Evin Prison have written to professional legal organizations, warning that a fellow attorney faces a critical medical condition and requires urgent hospital treatment.
Human rights lawyer Sina Yousefi reported that Mohammad Najafi and Mohammad Reza Faghihi wrote a letter describing the deteriorating health of their colleague, Taher Naghavi, and demanding his immediate transfer to a medical facility.
According to the letter, Naghavi has been detained since February 2024 and suffers from multiple spinal fractures and acute prostate disease that requires urgent surgery and specialized care.
The imprisoned lawyers said that despite medical documentation and repeated follow-ups, judicial authorities have taken no effective action to ensure Naghavi receives treatment.
Najafi and Faghihi cited Article 522 of Iran’s Criminal Procedure Code, which allows postponement of prison sentences for ill inmates. They warned that ignoring this legal requirement could cause irreparable harm.
The letter was addressed to Iran’s bar association and other professional legal bodies.
Iran has faced international criticism over prison conditions and inadequate medical care for detained lawyers, journalists, and activists.
