The United States has been chosen as the focus country for the 15th International Day of the Endangered Lawyer in 2026 — an unfortunate distinction, but certainly an understandable one. As the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA), which proposed the U.S. as the focus in 2026, said, the selection “reflects serious concerns over escalating attacks against lawyers in the U.S. in 2025. These include executive orders targeting law firms, harassment, political reprisals, and discriminatory measures that undermine the vital independence of the legal profession.” We appreciate and welcome this attention from the Day of the Endangered Lawyer coalition, which includes legal and human rights organizations around the world, including the New York City Bar Association.
