Iranian Lawyer Sentenced to Prison for Criticizing Judicial System

The Islamic Republic’s authorities have sentenced an Iranian lawyer to one year in prison and imposed a two-year ban on practicing law.

Behnam Nezadi, a member of Iran’s Bar Association, was sentenced by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in central Arak.

According to HRANA Human Rights Activists News Agency, Nezadi was convicted of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”

He also faces additional pending charges of “spreading falsehoods” and “disclosing confidential information” at the Criminal Court.

During his preliminary interrogation in July, authorities accused him of undermining the judiciary, eroding judges’ confidence, and attempting to overthrow the Islamic Republic.

The case is part of a broader pattern of increasing restrictions on lawyers and civil rights activists in Iran.
