Law Asia Announce Their Indonesia Law Firm Awards 2024

Here’s what they are saying

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, will see a new leader sworn in this year, amid expectations by the World Bank that it will experience steady economic growth in the coming years. In April, Indonesia’s election commission formally declared Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto the president-elect, taking over from two-term President Joko Widodo in October.

Despite the price declines of Indonesia’s main export commodities, the country’s economy grew by 5.11% in the first quarter of this year, according to BPS-Statistics Indonesia. The World Bank, while pointing to negative external factors including stronger food and energy price fluctuations in its latest report released in June, forecast Indonesia’s GDP growth to average 5.1% per year from 2024 to 2026.

In the same report, the Word Bank’s Indonesia and Timor-Leste director, Carolyn Turk, attributes the Indonesian government’s “robust macroeconomic policy framework” as a key contributing factor driving the country’s strong economic performance.

In Indonesia’s M&A market, the transaction value is projected to reach USD6.67 billion this year, a slight drop from last year’s USD7.03 billion, according to global data and business intelligence platform Statista. But Statista also notes foreign investors have been increasingly interested in Indonesia’s M&A market, with global companies “eyeing Indonesian firms as potential investment targets”.

Besides economic, market and political developments, there has also been new activity on the regulatory front. In January this year, Indonesia enacted an amended law on electronic information and transactions, covering new provisions that include a requirement for e-certification service providers to be domiciled in Indonesia.

The country’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) also recently introduced significant changes to the reporting requirements for shareholders of listed companies. The new regulation includes a rule stipulating that a shareholder’s ownership percentage be based on the number of valid voting rights, rather than shares held.

In our annual awards, Asia Business Law Journal has traditionally acknowledged a unique blend of local independent law firms and international players. Our team has carefully identified Indonesia’s law firms proven to be the best in the country. One has risen to the top as Law Firm of the Year, along with four winners in 28 other categories, each of equal standing.
