March 8 (Reuters) – The American Bar Association has approved a plan that gives current law students at California’s Golden Gate University a path to obtain their law degrees despite the looming closure of the university’s J.D. program this summer.
Current students will be able to finish their J.D.s at other ABA-accredited law schools while still getting a Golden Gate diploma through July 1, 2027, under the teach-out plan, opens new tab approved last month and posted Wednesday to the ABA’s website.
The last ABA-accredited law school to come under a teach-out plan was Florida Coastal School of Law, which closed in 2021.
San Francisco-based Golden Gate University announced in November that it will shut down its J.D. program as a result of declining financials, enrollment declines, a difficult employment market, and low bar exam pass rates.
