IAPL

April 7, 2023. The Ethiopian Government Armed Forces has abducted lawyer Alelign Mihretu. He is a defense lawyer for various illegally detained individuals in connection with the current wave of mass detention of Amhara Persons of Interest. Mr Alelign was handling the case of Professor Maeregu Biyabeyen, Professor Sisay Awgichew, Dr. Assefa Adane, and others, who we recently reported of their unlawful abduction by the government. Lawyer Alleligne Meheretu was detained as he was coming back from visiting his detained clients. It is to be recalled that Lawyer Alleligne Meheretu represented Colonel Demeke Zewdu and other Wolkait Amhara Identity Committee members during the previous EPRDF regime.

It is now a criminal offence to be an Amhara lawyer in Ethiopia just as it is a crime to be exist as an Amhara professor, journalist, humanitarian or student. This is the reality under the Oromo Prosperity apartheid regime’s dystopia.#FreeAleligneMihretu#FreeAmharaDetainees https://t.co/FIA9dKhDfy
