A British barrister has single-handedly mounted a scheme to rescue more than 100 female Afghan judges and their families.
Baroness Kennedy, working with a team of pro bono lawyers, has raised more than £1 million, chartered planes and organised airlifts from Kabul, ferrying hundreds of people to Athens where they are now staying in hotels.
She persuaded the president of Greece, a former judge, to take them, as well as the government of Georgia to let them transit, and bought half a sheep for the wedding of a Taliban commander’s daughter to get people without passports through a checkpoint.
“This is Schindler’s List time,” said Kennedy. “These women were in mortal danger. They were running courts on things like domestic violence and child marriage
