420 Music Festival in Detroit gets OK to proceed with legal cannabis consumption

The 420 Music Festival — billed by organizers as the “first festival allowing the legal consumption of cannabis” by the city of Detroit and set for later this month in Corktown — briefly sparked confusion Thursday among city officials about whether it had been canceled.

It also raised questions about sanctioned marijuana consumption even as Detroit Police announced a 12-point safety plan aimed at curbing crime that included an increased law enforcement presence, curfews for teenagers and a crackdown on alcohol use.

“The city of Detroit approved its first festival allowing the legal consumption of cannabis,” the festival’s online Eventbrite signup said, adding that “The indoor/outdoor event will allow for the consumption of cannabis on-site beginning at noon and lasting through the end of the day.”
