CALS NEWSLETTER | FALL 2024
It’s that time of year—our students are looking ahead to finals and the end of the semester. It has been an exciting fall, with a rich variety of animal law events.

Our Fall Newsletter features some highlights of the semester, including: Animal Law Welcome Week; the diverse courses our students are taking this semester; an exciting promotion for Animal Law LLM alumna, Hira Jaleel; an introduction to the newest member to our team, Saylor Soinski; the 32nd Animal Law Conference; and announcing our fourth round of CALS Ambassadors. We’re also delighted to share that the application window to start in the animal law advanced degree program for Fall 2025 is now open.

We are grateful for your support of our mission at the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) and your commitment to law and education for the vital role they play in advancing animal protection around the world.

Congratulations to the Lewis & Clark Animal Legal Defense Fund Student Chapter (LCALDF) and its co-leaders, Mei Brunson and Suzannah Smith, for hosting an inaugural Animal Law Welcome Week. The students planned a robust roster of events for the week of September 9-12th to build community and to share exciting developments in the field of animal law.

The week included: a welcome event co-hosted by LCALDF, CALS and the Animal Law Review; lunch-time talks on ag gag laws and environmental regulation of factory farms; and a film screening of The Territory. The week was a resounding success! Please note that welcome week does not replace the annual spring semester Animal Law Week. Stay tuned for more details in 2025!

Animal Law Coursework | Fall Semester

We kicked off the fall semester in late August. The animal law curriculum at Lewis & Clark Law School is unparalleled as we offer at least 18 distinct courses every academic year. JD and advanced degree animal law students are enjoying the following courses:

Hira Jaleel Named Visiting Assistant Professor

Please join us in congratulating Animal Law LLM alumna, Hira Jaleel (LLM ‘20, Pakistan), for being named Visiting Assistant Professor! Hira joined the CALS team in August 2022 as an Animal Law Teaching Fellow. In that role, she contributed to the success of the online advanced degree program and taught several courses. A Fullbright Scholar and former CALS Ambassador, Hira’s research and scholarship focus on international animal law, industrial animal agriculture law, food law, and aquatic animal law, with extensive publications on animal law developments in South Asia. She is leading the Farmed Animal Protection Project and teaching Aquatic Animal Law and Food Law. Read more about Hira and her new role here.

Saylor Soinski New Animal Law Teaching Fellow

Saylor Soinski has joined CALS as an Animal Law Teaching Fellow. In her new role, she will support the Animal Law Program, with a primary focus on contributing to the success of the online courses in the Animal Law LLM and Animal Law MSL degree programs. She will also serve as an advisor for the Animal Law Review. Saylor is a California attorney and 2023 Yale Law School alum, where she was an Emerging Scholars Fellow for the Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law & Policy. Learn more about Saylor here.

The 32nd Annual Animal Law Conference

We celebrated this year’s Animal Law Conference (ALC) with a sold-out crowd as attendees enjoyed a weekend devoted to animal law and advocacy on October 18-20th in Portland, Oregon, and online. The 32nd annual event offered a remarkable platform for animal attorneys, academics, students, and advocates from around the world to share insights and stay updated on the latest developments in animal law. The photo above features Lewis & Clark animal law students, alumni, faculty, and staff at this year’s ALC. Read here to learn more. Stay tuned for our announcement about the date and location for next year’s event. The ALC is co-hosted annually by CALS and the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
