ore than 30 cities on six continents, $7 million raised for good causes. Those are the headline achievements of the Law Rocks initiative, which celebrated its 15th anniversary last week with a sell-out gig in London’s Scala venue, coinciding with London International Disputes Week.
Six bands representing a wide range of legal talent put on shows of cover material.
The night opened with a stomping performance from ever popular Law Rocks duo the Whiskey Kittens (Nikki Link and Katie Stephenson), climaxing with ‘Go Your Own Way’ – impossible not to join in.
Next up, another old favourite: CMS’s The Stragglers, winners of the first ever Law Rocks back in 2009. Their 80s-influenced set included covers of Sledgehammer and Running up that Hill.
Jones Chase’s Hot Damn!, who stormed last month’s 100 Club event, followed. This time, for reasons not totally explained, dressed as ancient Roman legionnaires, for a classic mashup of Seven Nation Army and Sweet Dreams are made of this. The line-up: James Ullman, vocals (and stage-diving); Simon de Broise, lead guitar; Stuart Meggs, bass, with managing partner Dean Jones on drums.
Making a special visit from Texas were Pro Hac Vice, current champion of Law Rocks! Houston. The band features talent from Akin; Enterprise Products Partners; The Friedkin Group and Harris County Law Library. Line-up: John Goodgame (guitar, vocals); Charlie San Miguel (drums/percussion); Mario Barrientos (bass); Travis Earp (guitar, vocals); Scott Davidson (lead vocals, keytar) – and MC Andre Davison.
Next up, Track Changes, a group including two Mishcon de Reya alumni fronted by Suzi Sendama, put on a tight set finishing with the Stones’ Satisfaction. The band included Oliver Neasham (keys), Joe Young (guitar), Kevin Hall (bass) and Janith Perera (drums) with a cameo from Allexa Nava on sax. The Whiskey Kittens’ Nikki Link joined on vocals with Aoife McCann Jackson.
And finally, Hot WIP from Trowers & Hamlin, winners of last year’s Paris IBA event, had the crowd jumping with a set including Park Life and Fit but You Know It.
The bar closed at 3am, so some bleary eyes were seen in the Rolls Building and Royal Courts of Justice last Friday.
