Singapore Appoints Four New Judicial Commissioners Of The High Court

President Tony Tan Keng Yam has appointed four individuals as Judicial Commissioners of the High Court, the Prime Minister’s Office announced on Monday (Sep 15).

The four are:

Ms Valerie Thean Pik Yuen
Ms Hoo Sheau Peng
Assoc Professor Debbie Ong Siew Ling
Mr Aedit Abdullah

Ms Thean and Ms Hoo will be appointed as Judicial Commissioners with effect from Sep 30 for a term of three years. Mr Abdullah and Assoc Professor Ong will be appointed with effect from Nov 17, and it will be for a term of three years and two years, respectively.

Ms Thean will also be appointed as the Presiding Judge of the Family Justice Courts from Oct 1. She held previous appointments such as the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Law (2012 to 2014) as well as the Senior District Judge of the Family and Juvenile Justice Division of the State Courts (since March 2014).

Ms Hoo is currently the Deputy Chief Counsel (Advisory and Administration) of the Civil Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Singapore Legal Service.

Assoc Professor Ong has held held various academic positions in the Faculty of Law in the National University of Singapore, and is an expert in family law.

Mr Aedit is currently the Chief Prosecutor in the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers. He held previous appointments in the legal sector, such as District Judge of the then-Subordinate Courts in 2004 and as special counsel at the Monetary Authority of Singapore from Jan 2008 to June 2009. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2012.

In a statement, Attorney-General V K Rajah said Mr Aedit has been responsible for “many positive changes within the AGC”. “He has discharged his responsibilities as a Chief Prosecutor with demonstrable conscientiousness, conspicuous fairness and admirable balance,” he said.

He also praised Ms Hoo for serving the AGC with “real distinction”. He said she “has made a real difference during her stint here with her unflagging devotion to her responsibilities, her administrative know-how, impressive breadth of legal knowledge and keen mind”.

With these appointments, the Supreme Court will have a total of 14 Judges (including the Chief Justice) and eight Judicial Commissioners.
