Full Job Description

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a member of the Legislative Reference Library team, this individual serves as an information consultant to members of the legislative community, state agencies, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Conducts in-depth legal and legislative and research using primary and secondary sources.

Instructs clients in use of the library.

Participates in traditional and electronic collection development.

Participates in daily, weekly, and monthly current awareness activities.

Assists in developing and updating manual and online research aids.

Assists in indexing daily newspaper clippings.

Assists in developing new services.

OTHER DUTIES:

Performs routine circulation functions.

Participates in library orientation and outreach programs and conducts tours.

Assists in compiling Index to Sections Affected and other session-related activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

MLS from an ALA accredited library school.

Relevant library or archives experience with legal or legislative experience preferred.

Experience using a variety of online databases.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

Demonstrated ability to resolve problems with tact and diplomacy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years experience in working with archival records or as a reference, legislative, or law librarian.

Basic knowledge of primary legal and legislative research materials.

Experience using commercial databases for legal research.

Experience creating and maintaining research aids.

Experience in indexing, abstracting, or cataloging.

Knowledge of Texas state government and the Texas legislative process.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Submit portfolio or writing samples and other relevant work products.

Evening and weekend hours required during legislative sessions.

Overtime required during legislative sessions.

Ability to lift 40 lbs. and meet other physical demands of the position such as manual dexterity, long-term standing, sitting, and repetitive motions such as bending, reaching, and scanning.

SUPERVISION:

Reports to the assistant director.

Pay: $4,350.00 per month
