Summer holidays are coming although it doesn?t feel like it here in Hong Kong up on the Peak with the clouds coming in and the rain bucketing down.

The big publishers are remaining relatively quiet especially Lexis Nexis who haven?t really made any major announcements since their tie in with Word.

That said, it appears that there?s a big change at Lexis coming some time later in the year. One of our North American operatives has found out from some senior Lexis sources that Andy Prozes is internally announcing his plans to leave the company.

The details are more than fuzzy .. all we know is that he?s told certain individuals that he?s leaving and we imagine if he?s told them ?that means he?ll be gone by the end of the year.

We?ve got no suggestions as to who will replace him and we doubt Lexis have any solid idea at the moment either.

Like being the BP CEO the job is somewhat of a poisoned chalice and to be honest we don?t envy the person who has to take LN properly into the 21st century.

Talking of the 21st century, we did take pleasure in the fact that Steve Jobs couldn?t get a signal on his new i phone 4 yesterday when he launched it in San Francisco.

That said this doesn?t seem to be affecting the game changing products that apple is putting out at the moment.

When the launch of the ipad was announced a few months ago we read quite a few online pundits who suggested that the i pad would not and could not really serve the legal community?s needs; and that most lawyers & law firms would still be better served by old windows hardware and the Blackberry.

We think this couldn?t be further from the truth. This week Susskind declared his love for the product and yes he does say that as it is he?s not sure how useful it is at the moment.

I don?t dare say that Susskind is missing the point. But it seems to me that it?s all about the apps. The app industry has grown at an incredible rate since the launch of the i phone .

It?s altered the online games industry as well as many others and legal publishing will without doubt be drawn into the world of apps. The question is ..Can the legal publishing and technology adapt quickly enough or will newer ?app based companies start nibbling away at their revenues with new ideas and new products.

For us Twitter shows us the future .. Only now 3 years after the appearance of Twitter have the legal publishers really worked a strategy to make their presence known and understood on Twitter. Twitter has really threatened revenue streams? apps will and if the publishers take three years to work out apps they will suffer the consequences. ?

The issue is .. can an acquisition programme help them deal with the issue if they don?t have the inhouse experience to develop new ideas or products for the new generation of lawyers around the world who will want to do more and more of their work on the move.

?Best wishes Sean Hocking ??LLN
