Carl Minzner Professor of Law at Fordham Law School has just translated this People’s Daily article that is up on Xinhua’s front page.(online).. more doublespeak for us all to wade through.
As of Tuesday am Hong Kong Time – there is not a single word to be found on the entry page at http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/ which comes as no surprise to us
Here’s what Minzer writes..
1) Tough language from the Chinese state media on the Hong Kong protestors – “extremists” who “show contempt for the rule of law.”
2) Note that Party authorities have stated that the fall plenum, to begin in just a few weeks, will focus on “rule of law” (??) . Ergo, a hypothetical crackdown could be positioned at the plenum as upholding the rule of law.
3) The last bit is interesting – ????????????????????????????????????????????????Sounds tough – “Regarding Hong Kong’s political system, we at the Center have the ultimate power to decide.” But is there a smidgen of light for compromise in the second sentence? Is the underlying meaning (I’m rewording the literal translation here, obviously) “We just don’t want a Chief Executive who is opposed to our rule.”
